Life sucks

1. Migraine day 3.
2. My husband lost his job.
3. We're leaving for a wedding/vacation on Thursday. I should be happy about this but see number 2.

Routine

Last night I got to thinking about how I've been enjoying my nightly routine.
5-5:15pm: get home from work
5:15-6pm: work out-either go for a run/walk, or strength training (30Day Shred, etc.)
6-6:15: shower
6:15-7:15: cook, eat dinner, and clean up
7:15-9: watch Seinfeld, Jeopardy, and Wipeout if it's on, play with the cats, and/or read
9-10pm: lay in bed and watch TV, usually something along the lines of Jon & Kate, Keeping up with the Kardashians, Real Housewives, or a cooking show. I might sometimes fall asleep at 9:05pm. Does that make me a loser?
10pm: TV off, sleep for 8 hours!

This has been my routine for a while now and I can even wake up at 6am without an alarm. Of course I always set it but I usually wake up 5-10 minutes before it goes off.

I don't object doing non-routine things during the week but I like to save my spontaneity for the weekends!
How about you? Do you have a routine?

Ten things I'd like to say

I saw this over at Marie's Blog Cafe and decided I need to get some things off my chest. I'm listing 10 things I would like to say to certain people in my life but can't say it to their faces.

1. Maybe you shouldn't have gotten a dog with your stupid boyfriend in the first place. Wishing it would die is really not the answer.

2. I hope you are nice and respectful. Remember, we live above you.

3. Please stop text messaging, listening to crappy music, and cracking your fingers. I'm only sitting 5 feet away from you.

4. Stop staring at me!

5. Your cologne stinks and you use way too much.

6. Sorry I haven't emailed you back. I just don't know what to say.

7. I hope we can get together and catch up sometime soon. I miss hanging out with you.

8. I can't wait until you are out of my life. I will be much happier.

9. I wish you lived closer.

10. You have no idea how easy you have it. I wish I could be there when you realize it.

3 books

Even though I've been busy lately I've still had time to read! I recently read the following three books. Since I'm heading to the beach in a few weeks I'm looking for a few beach reads! Have any recommendations?

Being Emily by Anne Donovan
Book description: "Things are never dull in the O'Connell family. Still, Fiona, squeezed between her quiet brother and her mischievous line-dancing twin sisters, thinks life in their tenement flat is far less interesting than Emily Bronte's. But tragedy is not confined to Victorian novels. And life for Fiona in this happy domestic setup is about to change forever. Following the devastating events of a single day, her family can never be the same. But perhaps, new relationships will develop - built on a solid foundation of love. Moving, funny and ultimately heart-warming, "Being Emily" is a wonderful novel about one young girl trying to find her place in the world amid the turmoil that only your own family can create."

I'm surprised that I made it though this book because of the narrators strong Scottish dialect. For example "Mammy'd made it hame, and since she'd gone it wasnae hame any mair." See what I mean? It is a sweet story but I wouldn't necessarily recommend it.

Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen
Book description: "Two gifted sisters draw on their talents to belatedly forge a bond and find their ways in life in Allen's easygoing debut novel. Thirty-four-year-old Claire Waverley manifests her talent in cooking; using edible flowers, Claire creates dishes that affect the eater in curious ways. But not all Waverley women embrace their gifts; some, including Claire's mother, escape the family's eccentric reputation by running away. She abandoned Claire and her sister when they were young. Consequently, Claire has remained close to home, unwilling to open up to new people or experiences. Claire's younger sister, Sydney, however, followed in their mother's footsteps 10 years ago and left for New York, and after a string of abusive, roustabout boyfriends, returns to Bascom, N.C., with her five-year-old daughter, Bay. As Sydney reacquaints herself with old friends and rivals, she discovers her own Waverley magic. Claire, in turn, begins to open up to her sister and in the process learns how to welcome other possibilities. Though Allen's prose can lean toward the pedestrian and the romance subplots feel perfunctory, the blending of horticultural folklore, the supernatural and a big dollop of Southern flavor should find favor with a wide swath of readers."

I read this for book club and really enjoyed it. I was quickly drawn to the characters, but I thought it ended rather abruptly. It wasn't what I expected which I can appreciate. I would recommend this book if your looking for a quirky, quick, summer read.

The little giant of Aberdeen County by Tiffany Baker
Book description: "Truly is born into a life of suffering and tragedy. Her mother dies in childbirth, and her father is ill equipped to deal with either of his two daughters. Truly’s sister, Serena Jane, is the acknowledged town beauty, while Truly suffers from an illness that causes her to grow way beyond normal size. When their father also dies, the girls are split up, and their lives diverge and reconnect in ways neither could imagine. Woven into the story of the sisters is a larger story of women and the ways they are forced to navigate the world. Although primarily a straightforward story, the novel is infused with moments of magic realism. At times the town of Aberdeen, with its stereotypical small-town prejudices and quirks, seems a little too familiar. Overall, though, the novel charms and will find a devoted audience." --Marta Segal Block

I also enjoyed this book and I was really drawn to the main character, Truly. Some of her actions surprised me at the end that made me dislike her a little. I don't want to spoil it for anyone so that's all I'll say. I usually don't like books that start off giving clues to the ending but this left just enough suspense to keep me intrigued.

No weekend plans!

For the first weekend in several I have no plans! What a great feeling. It's supposed to be beautiful this weekend so I'm hoping to be outside quite a bit. I have some other things in mind of how I might spend my weekend. They include:
reading
shopping for skirts and vacation clothes
making cards
cleaning (this is a must!)
planning meals for the week

What do you enjoy doing when you have no plans?

Wednesday, June 3, 2009

Life has been super busy the past few weeks which left me with little desire to write, or respond to emails or comment on blogs, for that matter. I don't have any major plans until the end of the month so I'm back with the regular scheduled programing until then, when I'll likely drop off the face of the earth.

4 day weekend

Tomorrow morning we're driving to Michigan for a wedding that Drew is in on Saturday. We'll go to the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner tomorrow evening. Saturday the wedding isn't until 7pm so I might make a trip to the Detroit Art Institute, or I might just lounge at the pool all day! The wedding should be lots of fun and I think my new necklace is going to look fabulous with my black dress and pink shoes! We're staying at the Ritz-Carlton (that's where the wedding and reception are being held) so I'm hoping it's everything that the name implies. We'll drive home on Sunday morning after the brunch. Then, that evening is our annual street parade with a cook-out afterwords. I think I'm going to take Monkey Bread. Monday is the annual street golf outing and by street I mean they actually play 9 holes down the street. The organizers mow fairways and greens in various yards, set up flag and hula hoops for the holes and stock up on ping pong balls for the "golf balls". There is a beer boy and the national anthem is played. It's really quite amusing. Oh, and if you loose you actually win. After a round of golf and the awards ceremony there is another cook-out. I usually take buffalo chicken dip for this but I'm thinking about something different this year. Do you have a great recipe you'd like to share?
Now, I'll more than likely be drinking (but not driving!) for all of these activities so I've come up with a game plan. Friday-wine, Saturday- mixed drinks, Jack & Diet, perhaps, Sunday- beer, Monday- bloody marry followed by lots and lots of water. I promise I'm not an alcoholic. Actually, I'm usually, the DD.

So, what are your plans for this Memorial Day weekend?
